Careers in the beauty industry never go out of style because they define style. So landing a position as a skin care professional can be your ticket to a stable and fun line of work that can be as much about a lifestyle as a paycheck.
It’s a way to let your personal artistic style and natural creativity surface while getting paid to use those skills to help other people look and feel their best. And if you’re like most prospective estheticians, helping clients achieve that healthy glow is one way to get your own healthy glow on. It feels good to make people look good. Getting paid to do it sometimes feels like a bonus!
The beauty industry is booming and estheticians are in high demand around the country with new positions for skincare specialists expected to grow by around 14 percent over the next decade.
There aren’t many professions out there that can offer the promise of varied and lucrative opportunities the same way esthetics can, opening up doors to everything from salaried positions in elite medi-spas to independent practice as the owner of your own business, and even the chance to be a spa owner yourself one day. And if you can find a reasonably priced program, you could have it all with a one-time educational investment of just a few thousand dollars.
We built this list with that kind of value in mind, only featuring programs with total costs below the average in each state. Getting a good deal on a top quality education is a jump start into a career path where you’ll get a chance to be your own boss. It’s a career that brings passion, creativity, technology and skin science together to help people achieve healthy, beautiful skin. Having this kind of expertise is an enviable position to be in, and one that can be as lucrative as it is fun.
State by State Evaluation of the Best Value in Esthetics Training
There’s plenty of obvious reasons to evaluate tuition rates on a state-by-state basis instead of just putting together a list of the lowest cost options in the country. For starters, there are several – and sometimes dozens – of esthetics programs available in a given state. This allows local beauty academies to cater to students in every corner of the state without the need for them to relocate or make a long daily commute to get their training. We wanted to make sure the list we put together here is really useful for eager would-be esthetics students, no matter where they live. By performing a state-by-state pricing review, we were able to increase our coverage, providing several options to cover the different areas in each state, rather than featuring just a big name school or two in the major metro areas.
Considering the way licensing is handled for estheticians, it only makes sense to look at training programs state-by-state. Different states have different requirements for the number of hours of training required to become licensed, and beauty academies in each state develop their esthetics programs to meet those requirements. You wouldn’t expect a program in a state with a 300-hour training requirement to cost the same as one where estheticians are required to have 750-hours of training to become licensed.
In a few instances where there was just one NACCAS-accredited program in a given state, we included it here without the ‘less than state average’ line if its tuition rates were in line with what we were seeing among the high-value programs offered in the region with similar clock-hour requirements. But no program was included by default just because it happened to be the only option in the state – if a program didn’t offer competitive pricing, it simply didn’t make the cut.
Accreditation Underpins Value in Esthetics Training Programs
Being well-trained is a key ingredient to a successful esthetics career and there are no shortage of schools eager to take your tuition dollars with the claim that they will deliver that training. But it doesn’t take much for a salon to hang a sign out front that says “school” without actually offering the kind of training the industry demands or that state licensing boards require.
That’s why it’s important to look for validation that a school will deliver what it says it will. And that’s why we only considered schools with NACCAS accreditation, or those in candidate status that have submitted their paperwork and are soon to be accredited.
NACCAS is the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences, an autonomous, U.S. Department of Education-approved organization that formally evaluates and accredits postsecondary schools and departments of cosmetology. There are only 1,300 NACCAS-accredited institutions in the entire country today, a select list of beauty schools that meet the highest standards in the field, and of those, less than half offer esthetics programs specifically.
NACCAS does some of the heavy lifting when it comes to verifying the quality of an esthetics program. We considered this the first filter in our evaluation. From there we started looking into the things we known mean the most to students of esthiology.
Selecting a School to Suit Your Individual Style
Although accreditation establishes the baseline for curriculum and training, it doesn’t mean that all accredited schools are exactly the same. In an industry that embraces individuality and a personal sense of style, there is plenty of opportunities for schools to express their own style and uniqueness too.
We know that no aspiring esthetician is going to make the big decision about where to go to school by only looking at a price tag. You want an outstanding program at a reasonable price. You know that good value doesn’t just mean cheap. Instead, it means that you’re getting what you want and need without paying more than you have to for it.
Sure – we only selected the lowest cost accredited programs in each state, every last one of them with tuition rates below the state average, but we didn’t stop there. We also included the key details you need to know to feel confident you’re making the right decision for yourself, your career and your clients…
Product Partnerships
Many of the schools have partnerships with some of the most in-demand and advanced product manufacturers in make-up and skincare treatments today, including Dermalogica, Aveda, and MUD makeup. Maybe these are the products you already use, or maybe they’re the ones you want to know more about. Schools with product partnerships give you exposure to and experience with exactly the kind of products that employers and clients are going to expect you to be an expert with.
A Strong Foundation to Build On
A good esthetics school won’t just give you the techniques to use for exfoliation, hair removal, and massage—they’ll teach you the physiology and chemistry behind those procedures, along with providing hours of training dedicated exclusively to safety, ethics and business considerations. The best schools out there go beyond the basics of application to train you in the science behind the modern esthetic arts, how to ensure the safety of your clients, and the best ways to manage your business to ensure profitability.
Cutting-Edge Technology
New technologies are constantly being introduced in the beauty industry, and if you can’t keep up, you’ll be left behind. Laser treatments, microdermabrasion, and chemical peal systems have been common in spas and medical centers for years, but the technology and product compounds are changing all the time. Schools that can train and certify you in the safe and effective use of the latest equipment and products are a solid choice today.
Networking and Job Placement
Estheticians are in-demand all around the country, but finding your dream job can have a lot to do with knowing the right people. Schools that have extended alumni networks and dedicated job placement assistance extend their value by giving you not only the tools you need to pass state licensing exams and perform esthetics services, but also help you connect with other professionals and salons so you can find the perfect fit.
